Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens

The canon ef 50mm f/1.8 STM opens to f/1.8 at the natural-perspective standard focal length, providing strong subject separation and three stops of light advantage over f/5.6 kit lenses for portraits, low-light photography, and everyday shooting on Canon EF DSLR cameras.

The STM stepping motor delivers smooth and near-silent autofocus during video recording, with full compatibility with Canon DSLR continuous AF tracking modes and Dual Pixel CMOS AF on Canon EOS DSLRs that support it during live view shooting.

An aspherical glass element in the optical formula controls spherical aberration at the f/1.8 aperture, improving center and edge rendering compared to a purely spherical design and maintaining consistent image quality across the standard 50mm angle of view.

Seven rounded aperture blades produce smooth and near-circular out-of-focus highlights at f/1.8, delivering pleasing background blur and subject separation for portrait, street, and low-light photography on full-frame and APS-C Canon EF cameras.

Super Spectra multi-layer coatings on internal elements suppress flare and ghosting when shooting backlit subjects or in environments with mixed artificial and natural lighting, maintaining image contrast at the standard 50mm focal length.

The non-rotating front element maintains filter orientation during autofocus travel, allowing circular polarizing filters to retain their set position throughout the full focus range without requiring readjustment between shots.

A compact and lightweight construction makes this the most portable fast prime in the Canon EF lineup, suitable for everyday carry alongside a camera body without adding significant weight or bulk to the photography kit.

Designed for the Canon EF mount and covering the full 35mm image circle, this lens is compatible with all Canon EOS DSLR cameras and with Canon EOS R mirrorless cameras via the Canon EF-EOS R mount adapter.
